Position Summary
The Police Officer serves as a uniformed presence on campus, promoting lawful behavior and ensuring the safety and welfare of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This role involves routine foot and vehicle patrols, securing campus property, responding to disturbances and emergencies, enforcing college regulations, and maintaining order during events. Officers are responsible for monitoring the safety of college facilities, locking and unlocking buildings, using surveillance systems, and reporting suspicious activity.
Reporting Structure
This position reports directly to the Director of Public Safety, who reports to the President of Kaskaskia College.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in law enforcement
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of a certified basic police training course and possession of a current law enforcement certification
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- United States citizenship
- Familiarity with the community college environment
- Strong understanding of law enforcement procedures, civil and constitutional law, judicial processes, and the standard 10 code
- Proficient in police practices, investigative procedures, and the safe handling of police equipment and firearms
- Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Good physical condition, including vision, hearing, strength, and agility
- Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts and solve problems effectively
- Must exhibit integrity, sound judgment, responsibility, and honesty
- Possession of a valid Illinois Drivers License and FOID card
Preferred:
- Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct regular patrols of campus facilities on foot and by vehicle
- Prepare detailed written reports of incidents, investigations, and activities
- Provide security for all campus buildings and property
- Enforce campus rules, traffic laws, and parking regulations
- Maintain order during college functions, events, and emergencies
- Assist in emergency response situations, including fire alarms, medical incidents, and safety threats
- Serve as the first responder to medical and other emergencies
- Monitor campus activity and respond to calls for service
- Maintain proficiency with department-issued equipment and tools
- Promote community engagement and positive public relations throughout the campus
- Keep accurate records of services and activities performed

Work Environment & Physical Demands
This position may require physical exertion, including walking, running, lifting, climbing, kneeling, and crawling. Work may involve exposure to challenging environments such as inclement weather, loud noises, infectious diseases, high-risk situations, animals, and irregular hours.
